Cove Pond is a folk-rock group from Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador, blending moody folk with dark, ambient textures. Formed by singer-songwriter Laura Penney and percussionist Scott Yetman, the husband-and-wife duo create music rich in atmosphere and emotion. In 2024, bassist Desmond Smith joined the group, grounding their sound with smooth, groovy undertones.
Rooted in the stark beauty of Newfoundland’s landscapes, Cove Pond’s songs explore memory, loss, and the quiet weight of place. Laura’s songwriting wanders between English and French, and draws from solitude and nostalgia, while Scott’s intricate percussion and electric textures add cinematic depth. Together, they craft songs shaped by both tradition and modern folk influence.
Laura’s songwriting began over two decades ago, with her debut “Papercuts” earning the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Award in 2009. After early performances in Corner Brook and Quebec City, she stepped back to focus on family and teaching. A creative resurgence in 2023 led to new songs like “Black-capped Chickadee,” a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition.
Since returning to the stage, Cove Pond has played the St. John’s International Folk Festival, the NL Folk Arts Society’s Soirée Francophone, and the Gala de la Chanson de Caraquet, where Laura’s song “Malgré le verglas” earned two national nominations. In 2025, she won another Arts and Letters Award for her French lyrics to “La terre donnée à Caïn.” This past winter, Cove Pond joined MusicNL’s export delegation at Folk Alliance International in Montreal.
The group is currently recording their debut EP with producer Axel Belgarde of Port-aux-Poutines. Shaped by fog, forest, and the pull of memory, Cove Pond’s music is a place to reflect, drift, and feel.
